Ep.01/

Gallery Owner & Art Advocate Daisha Board

I first met Daisha in 2019 at Disrupt Dallas, an auxiliary of Dallas Start Up Week. Originally from New York, Daisha has built a life in Texas. She comes from a family of collectors who introduced her to art at a young age. This early education instilled an appreciation for art to inform and shift narratives in our society. However, it wasn't until adulthood that Daisha found her passion for art.

An African American history professor opened Daisha's eyes to artists such as Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett while studying at university. Post undergrad, she began to visit galleries on a quest to understand how these artists were represented in the art market.  What Daisha found was a bleak representation of black and women artists within galleries and traditional art institutions. This insight sparked the idea that led to Black Sheep Art Culture.

She set her sights on emerging spaces that lacked the engrained biases that she was confronted with in more established art institutions.

From this moment forward, Daisha had an idea of what she wanted to do. Her idea was rooted in her passion for art and advocating for the marginalized artists who were under-represented. Like many early-stage female founders, she encountered resistance from the established art world. She questioned gallerists and patrons alike, hoping to gain additional insight into the market's appetite for black women artists and artists of color.

Daisha soon found that scaling her business would require her to build relationships with industry veterans who may not share the same beliefs about diversity and inclusion. Moreover, she would have to overcome the entrenched notion that minority and female artists are not commercially viable. In 2021, Daisha opened the Daisha Board Gallery in Dallas.
